I can only answer you one question.
T mobile unlimited international texting may not work with any AT&T phones in Canada.
It maybe useless to get the phone unlocked.
You maybe better/cheaper go to any Gas station in Canada and buy a CiCi or Vox Ultra International calling card for Can $5 or Can $10 + tax,using a landline /payphones to call home.
